Baby pants are so cute. Between all of the spit up and diaper blow outs you can never have enough baby clothes! They’re really simple to make (these don’t even need elastic for the waistband) and there are so many fun fabrics to choose.
I want to share a quick sewing tutorial on how to make these DIY baby pants. You can find my free pattern here with sizes from newborn to 18 months. And if your baby has extra long legs like mine, it’s easy to add extra length to the pants to make them fit better.
Any stretchy material will work for these. I didn’t want to spend much money on fabric and ended up using the material from a crib sheet to make the polka dot pants in this tutorial. It was less expensive than buying a similar pattern by the yard!

Baby Pants Sewing Tutorial
Here’s what you’ll need:
Materials
- Printable pattern (find it here!)
- Fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins or clips
- Needle and thread
- Sewing machine
Step 1.
Print, cut the appropriate size, and tape together the pants pattern. Leave the waistband and leg cuffs pattern pieces separate. I’m using the 3-month size in this tutorial.

Step 2.
Cut out 2 pieces of the pants pattern.
To do this, fold your fabric in half. Place the pants pattern on top, lining up the folded edge of the fabric to the fold side of the pattern.
Cut around the pattern either with a rotary cutter or by pinning the pattern to the fabric and using fabric scissors.

Step 3.
Place the 2 pants pieces right sides together and sew a ¼ inch zigzag stitch along the top sides (yellow lines in the picture below).

Step 4.
Line up the seams that were just sewn keeping right sides together and sew a ¼ inch zig zag stitch along the inner legs (yellow lines in the picture below).

Flip pants right side out.
Step 5.
Cut out fabric for two leg cuffs.
To do this, place the leg cuffs pattern on top of your fabric and cut around the pattern either with a rotary cutter or by pinning the pattern to the fabric and using fabric scissors. I folded over my fabric so I only had to cut around the pattern once to get two cuffs.

Step 6.
Fold the leg cuffs in half with right sides folded together so that the fold is on the short length of the fabric. Sew a ¼ inch zigzag stitch along the edge opposite the fold (yellow lines in the picture below) to make a loop.

Step 7.
Take each leg cuff loop and fold down the top so that the raw edges line up and the right sides of the fabric are facing out.

Step 8.
Slide the cuffs over the pant legs lining up the raw edges and sew around the raw edges (yellow lines) with a ¼ inch zigzag stitch.

Step 9.
Cut out waistband fabric.
To do this, fold your fabric in half. Place the waistband pattern on top, lining up the folded edge of the fabric to the fold side of the pattern.
Cut around the pattern either with a rotary cutter or by pinning the pattern to the fabric and using fabric scissors.

Step 10.
Fold the waistband in half with right sides folded together so that the fold is on the short length of the fabric. Sew a ¼ inch zigzag stitch along the edge opposite the fold (yellow line in the picture below) to make a loop.

Step 11.
Fold over the fabric so that the right side is facing out and the raw edges line up.

Step 12.
Slide the waistband over the top of the pants lining up the raw edges and making sure the seam in the waistband lines up with the seam in the pants. Sew around the raw edges (yellow lines) with a ¼ inch zigzag stitch.

Step 13.
Fold up the waistband and fold down the leg cuffs, trim off any excess fabric along the seams, and you have yourself a pair of baby pants!

Happy sewing!
