Babies are messy. Before our daughter was born, I had no idea how many burp cloths we would go through in a week. We have at least one in every room of our house because you never know when you’ll need it!
These DIY burp cloths are quick and easy to make and they are a cute baby shower gift. They’re also perfect for a fast, fun project to make for your own baby.
I made a set of 20 burp cloths for my cousin who is expecting her first baby and it took a little over 3 hours to finish everything. That’s only about 10 minutes per burp cloth!
The best part is that you can choose any pattern of fabric you want. You can match it to your nursery theme and colors or just pick whatever looks cute.
I’ve included a free pattern. Each burp cloth takes two 10 x 16 inch pieces of flannel fabric.

DIY Burp Cloths
Materials
- Free pattern (find it here!)
- Flannel fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins or clips
- Needle and thread
- Sewing machine
Step 1.
Print, cut, and tape together the burp cloth pattern.

Step 2.
Place pattern on top of fabric and either cut around the edge using a rotary cutter or pin the pattern to the fabric and cut around the edge using scissors.
Tip: If you are making multiple burp cloths fold the fabric so you can cut out two at a time. I was able to fold it twice and cut out 4 at a time, but anything more than that was too thick for my rotary cutter.

Step 3.
Place fabric right sides together and pin around the edge. I only used 4 pins – the flannel fabric sticks together pretty well.

Step 4.
Sew a ¼ straight stitch seam around the outside edge leaving a 1.5 to 2-inch opening (yellow line in picture below) at the bottom.

Step 5.
Turn the burp cloth right side out using the opening at the bottom.

Step 6.
Pin the opening closed.

Step 7.
Top stitch around the entire outside edge of the burp cloth closing the gap at the bottom.

That’s all there is to it!

Happy sewing!
